Forward-deployed engineering: what it means
Forward-deployed engineering is a delivery model in which software engineers work inside a customer's business, alongside the people who do the work, to build and run systems in that customer's environment. The term comes from Palantir, and AI companies have adopted it because agents only work when they are built around how a process really runs, which you learn by sitting with it.

Forward-deployed vs traditional delivery
| Traditional delivery | Forward-deployed | |
|---|---|---|
| Where engineers work | In their own office, from a spec | Inside the customer's teams and systems |
| Requirements | Written up front, then built | Learned from the work, then built and adjusted |
| Feedback loop | At each milestone | Daily, with the people using the system |
| Ends when | The project is delivered | The system runs and the team can operate it |
What a forward-deployed engineer does
- Shadows the team whose process is being rebuilt, and maps where time goes.
- Builds agents and integrations directly against the customer's systems of record.
- Writes evals from the customer's own past cases.
- Stays through go-live, handles the first exceptions, and trains the team to run what was built.
Why it matters for AI
The hard part of an AI system is rarely the model. It is the undocumented rule, the odd file format, the exception everyone handles from memory. Engineers working inside the business find those in days. Native uses this model on every engagement; it helped Avalara place forward-deployed engineers in every department. See how delivery works.

Frequently asked questions
What is a forward-deployed engineer?
A software engineer who works inside a customer's business, building and operating systems in that customer's environment rather than from a separate office.
Where did forward-deployed engineering come from?
The role was popularised by Palantir, whose engineers embedded with government and commercial customers. AI labs and implementation firms now use the same model.
Is forward-deployed engineering the same as consulting?
No. Consultants advise; forward-deployed engineers write the code and run the systems, on site, until the customer's team takes them over.
